 What is Tokusatsu? Tokusatsu is the small genre of mostly Japanese films and TV shows that are live-action drama and action shows with heavy use of special effects, an example that almost everyone knows would be Power Rangers , or more specifically Mighty Morphing Power Rangers  which aired in 1993. The genre began in 1960 with the creation of UltraMan , a show about a Japanese soldier who is given the ability to turn into a giant robot to fight alien invaders, the series was an instant success. Though the series is not anywhere as possible in the United States, a similar comparison would be that Ultra Man is the Superman of Japan, though stylistically the two differ greatly.  Post Production     Now that production is finished, looking back there are some things that I could have improved on. I did not realize the footage was overexposed until long after filming, Having the storyboard and the script allowed for a very quick filming process, I am glad to have finished this.

Spencer From ICarly     Nickelodeon's classic television series ICarly  has cemented itself in TV history to the younger generation. Though it's lovable characters, quirky setting and interesting stories are the main attractors, one aspect of the show I kept returning to would be the character of Spencer. He is the older brother of the man character, he is played by Jerry Trainor and adds great comedic relief through his character's interesting art portfolio. The artwork that Spencer produces can only be best described as expressive and confusing. I believe that though in reality, all of the art was produced by the writers of the show, I want to analyze each piece through the mind of Spencer.  How I Plan To Make The Film     Doubling down on this low budget aesthetic for the film, I plan to make use of the look for comedic effect. Adobe software's such as Premiere Pro and After Effects provide many ways for any film maker to preform many effects such as title sequences, and adding computer generated imagery, but I plan to forgo that for my film. The entire project will be filmed using carboard effects, titles, costumes, everything. There are multiples way I plan to get around the lack of computer effects, below I provided a drawing of how the effects will be made in simple ways. For most projects I have made, getting releases and permission to film on a location has added unnecessary time, so for controlled lighting and an open space, I will film a majority of the movie in my garage.

 Sources Of Inspiration     There are many many films that I love so dearly much, but if I was forced to pick a single favorite movie, it would be Monty Python And The Holy Grail . Though I live in a time where the group is long since pasted and I will never be able to the join the group, I can try my hardest to replicate the feeling of absurd and nonsensical comedy. My desired theme for this project is the Spirit Realm, so to combine the spiritual and serious theme of a different realm with the absurd and frankly stupid comedic tropes similar to that of the Monty Python group would be amazing to make. Although the serious nature of most spirit realm films would be hard to merge with the comedic nature, films such as Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters  have made the transition possible. 

 Production Update     As production continues, the desired look for the film begins to evolve as well. The desired aesthetic of the film will be hyper low budget, raw, and comedic. The reason for this looks comes from a previously mentioned group of creators on YouTube called Mega64 , the most popular example of this look comes from their comedic retelling of the Japanese animated show Dragon Ball Z . The group at Mega64 could not make quality versions of the characters costumes without appearing cheesy and crappy, so they instead doubled down on this look. The low budget look that comes with carboard costumes has always been appealing to me, so to make this film, I decided to make all the sets and costumes with carboard.  Here is the planned mask for the dragon which is the central antagonist of the film.  Why do your pictures look so yellow? In photography, and in the real world, light has temperatures, and these temperatures affect how the image turns out. Warmer light appears more yellow on cameras, while cooler light appears bluer. Cameras have no real clue what "white" is, the sensors only measure RGB values, and white is just the highest possible light level. So when you are in a setting with an especially yellow light, your camera does not know it is white, just that this color has some green and red values in them. To fix this issue, modern cameras have a white balance option, which allows the user to tell the camera which color is actually white, and from there the camera will balance everything else accordingly. For almost all cameras, this is done by taking a picture of a pure white surface, going into the White Balance setting, and selecting the picture that was just taken. How All Three Components Work Together     From the previous blogpost I have made, I have went through and explained ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture. All three have different ways of manipulating how light enters the camera, but combining the unique features of all three would allow for amazing results. To begin, aperture is how big or small the lense is, which allows for more or less light, with a low f-stop of 5.6, a lot of light would be flooding the lense, so with normal ISO and shutter speed, the image would be too bright. With a low f-stop, reducing the ISO would be a great choice, for it reduces grain in the image, preserving quality but allowing for proper right. On the other hand, you can increase the shutter speed, something with a speed of 1/400 of a second would allow for a still frame picture with little blur in the foreground.  Underrepresented Genres In Certain Themes By the nature of certain genres, more themes are easier to write in than others. Nature is much easier in drama and art pieces, the Here and Now is much easier in a drama or in a sitcom. Certain themes seem ripe for potential in certain genres but for somereason are not as common. High fantasy and the Sacred Realm seems like such a good combo, but the nature of how many of theses stories are written limits their potential. Many high fantasy stories are written from the perspective of lowly mortals in a fantasical world where the aether of afterlife is a mysterious force no one could understand. This trope is apparent in stories such as Game of Thrones, where lovecraftian themes are introduced which puts the gods under a viel of darkness, or Lord of The Rings where other companion books are used to describe to unearthly realm while only mentioning the realm in the main series.  Kings Quest Early on in the year, Mr. Bomboy said "I'm not expecting some large fantasy and amazing story", I am not making that, I am making the exact opposite. My goal with this project is to make a very tiny fantasy, with a very subpar story. For sources of inspiration, the main two are Monty Python and The Holy Grail  and the YouTube channel, Mega64 , which is known for their fast pace skits with absurd and comedic costumes.  What Is ISO? ISO is the third and final part of the exposure triangle, ISO in DSLR's is how sensitive the camera is to light coming in. Low ISO would mean low sensitivity to light, and so for a picture to be properly light, a slow shutter speed and a low f-stop would be needed. As ISO increases, the grain in the image increases, as the digital sensor in the camera is becoming too sensitive to light. Lower ISO would be good for properly lit environments, with a slow or no movement image. High ISO is great for nature and sports shots, because it allows for very quick shutter speed. Below are two pictures I took at 9pm in my backyard. The first picture had max ISO of 25600, an f-stop of 7.2, and a shutter speed of 25 seconds. With those conditions the picture is fully lit. The second picture had an ISO of 100, 30 second shutter speed, and a f-stop of 5.4, and the picture is near pitch black.

 What Is Aperture? Aperture is one of two physical mechanisms in the Exposure Triangle. Aperture refers to how width of the actual lense, with parts being covered by mechanisms that block light in a circle around the lense. The lower the aperture, the less of the lense is being covered, therefor more light entering the camera, which leads to more exposed image. Lower aperture affects depth of field through objects closer to the camera remaining clear while objects far away are blurred due to more light causing distortion in the image. While if the aperture was higher, the smaller hole of light allows for more focus of far away objects. This affect is similar to that of a Camera Obscura, all windows are technically producing an image on the wall behind it, but with a smaller pin sized hole, the image becomes clear. To find the right aperture for your scene, one must consider how they want to the picture to be presented, do they want a picture with heavy focus on the subject and blur...

 What Is Shutter Speed? Shutter speed is one of the main parts of the exposure triangle, it refers to the physical mechanic where the lens is exposed to light, with an actual shutter allowing light in for a specified amount of time. With it being the time the light is allowed in, shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second, and when the time exposed is more than a second, its just measured in normal seconds. A long exposure would be up to 30 seconds, or possibly as long as you want. The longer the exposure is, the more light is taken in, and from multiple sources, for example, with a long exposure, if someone were to throw a football, the camera would capture the light received from the football at the beginning of the arc, the peak, and where it lands. In comparison, a short exposure and a quick shutter speed would capture a clearer picture of the football at at a certain moment in the peak.  Theme Selection Choice      For this school year, I wish to mostly explore the theme of The Spirit Realm. The reason for the choice of this theme is the wide variety of possible films, the spirit realm does not have to be just the afterlife, but anything that transcends our earthly experience. The Spirit Realm as a theme is potentially one of the oldest known to human art. One of the oldest written stories, the Epic Of Gilgamesh, is a prime example of how old the theme, for how Gilgamesh had to travel to the underworld and accept his mortality as only two-thirds god. A common collaboration of themes is The Spirit Realm, and Nature, throughout world history, flood myths are some of the most common religious stories, tales of Gods saving a few select  humans and destroying the rest of the world.  DSLR vs Cellphone DSLR's are a very common and semiprofessional to professional level camera's often used in photography and film. DSLR stands for, Digital Single Lens Reflex. Digital for the fact there is a digital sensor to take in the light, single lens refers to how there is a single lens for the cameras main functions, and reflex means that there is a system that splits the light. How does a DSLR work? DSLR cameras have to main parts, the lens, and the body of the camera, light travels from a source and enters the lens. To recreate the image that the lens is seeing to the user, light is moved through a series of mirrors. First from the lens to the first mirror, where it is then reflected through a pentamirror, then from there it is sent to the viewing area. How do Cellphone cameras work?   Consistently my favorite subject throughout the years have been the social studies. The guitar in my mouth was a gift from the government teacher Mr. Paylo. I am very loud and obnoxious, so through out class I would play the tiny guitar he had on the window sill. After annoying the entire class all year, he decided to give it to me. The beginning of production started with the script being written, Josh provided a great script that upon revision with help from the group was made even better. From there Lexi made a storyboard based on the script taking into account rule of thirds, informal balance, and over the shoulder shots. In between scenes that needed me to act, I would take a zoom recorder and record the necessary audio files such as doors opening and closing, footsteps, screams, and small bits of disembodied dialogue. After all footage and audio was compiled, editing begun, in which I tried my hardest to provide an eery and unsettling mood, the lack of traditional audio makes the entire piece seem artificial and unnatural. Upon viewing the entire piece and being able to critique not just the final project but also the production of the film, it was clear there were some miss steps.
