 What Makes Lord of The Rings Feel Real?     J. R. R. Tolkien's groundbreaking fictional series Lord Of The Rings , and its related books The Hobbit , and The Silmarillion set the modern standard for how a fictional universe should be established, with some semblance of order, history, and consistency. The thing that sells the story to the reader is something that subconsciously everyone expects from foreign environments, a new language. Tolkien originally started with creating fictional languages, creating their structure, form, and pronunciation, then creating a fictional race of peoples that culture reflects the language they speak. Now everyone today is tired of the tropes of Elves living in places with "-ia" in the end, or the villains living somewhere with "mal-" in the name, but one must keep in mind that Tolkien is the originator of the tropes.
