Throughout the scene, multiple background sounds of the city can be heard, whether it be the shaking of fire escapes from people waking up, to the sounds of children crying in the streets. These added sounds provide a sense of realism and intricacy to the world created.

After World War 2, since Italy was one of the few countries movie industry was not left in shambles, it became the European leader in film. Since everyone returning home from the war saw horrible things and with even more horrible motivations, people were left disturbed, so this was translated to film. More dark themes such as lust, violence, and greed were shown as a sense of relation to the people who felt these thoughts.
